Salvador newspaper A Tarde confirmed today that Pepeu Gomes, voted by Guitar Music magazine one of the world’s top 10 guitar players in world music, will be King Momo in Salvador Carnival 2010.
Having a thin music star as a King Momo (the chosen kings are usually overweight, and not usually grand names of Brazil music) is just one of the news in Salvador Carnival 2010. In 2010, the festivities will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the trio elétrico, the sound-wired trucks-with-band started by Dodô and Osmar that lead Salvador Carnival parades, and the 25th anniversary of axé music. There’s more coming up: Moraes Moreira is back!
A Brazil music legend and the first musician to sing atop a trio elétrico, Moraes will again parade in Carnival after a 10-year absence.
According to G1, Moreira will perform on the Chame Gente trio elétrico on Feb.12, 14 and 16, 2010 alongside his son, Davi Moraes. The trio is named for Moreira’s song (meaning “Call People” — see Chame Gente lyrics and video), which is also the title of a documentary about the history of the trio elétrico.
